The GYROKINESIS® Method is a method of body movement that gently works the entire body, opening up energy pathways, stimulating the nervous system, increasing joint range of motion. Gyrokinesis creates functional strength through flowing, rhythmic movement sequences. Developed by Juliu Horvath, along with the Gyrotonic Method, it is an original method with qualities and benefits which are similar to those found in other movement based activities such as Yoga, Tai Chi, gymnastics, and dance. The Gyrokinesis method can be learned and practised in a group or private classes under the instruction of a certified Gyrokinesis Trainer. It can also be followed at home using a mat, chair, and instructional Gyrokinesis DVDs.
Gyrokinesis classes are either sixty or ninety minutes long. Each class begins the same way, with the participant sitting on a chair, engaging in a gentle warm-up sequence to awaken the senses, and stimulate the nervous system. Following on from this is a series of fluid, spinal motions which increase joint range of motion. These movements prepare the body to explore more complex movements with both agility and ease. The class then continues on the floor with exercises that expand on the spinal motions, gradually adding more complex sequences. This part of the class incorporates movements of the hips, shoulders, hands and feet. Standing sequences follow, incorporating balance and cardiovascular exercises. The session ends with an unwinding and calming sequence designed to prepare the body and mind to reintegrate with the everyday world.
